Kochi: The much awaited RORO (Roll On Roll Off) services was inaugurated by honorable Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kochi. Built at Cochin Shipyard by Cochin Corporation, the modern jhangar worth 8 crore rupees is designed to facilitate loading and unloading of vehicles from either side, functioning like a bridge that will ferry vehicles from one side to another. RORO jhangars also have dedicated jetties that have been built at a cost of another 8 crore rupees.
The service will be most beneficial to those traveling to small island groups between Fort Kochi and Vypin as it would take just less than 4 minutes to reach Vypin from Fort Kochi. At a time, the latest RORO Jhangar can ferry four trucks, 12 cars, and 50 passengers.
With the travel time reduced, RORO services are expected to ease traffic congestion in the city. The services being the first of its kind to be launched by a city corporation is a huge relief to the natives of West Kochi.
