Idukki dam: Report of precaution will submit in the evening

Even though the gravity of rain is less the water inflow to the dam is strong. If this continues for another week the shutters of the dam is to be opened, informed M M Mani, the power minister informed last day.

 

Thiruvananthapuram: Additional Secretary (Revenue), P.H.Kurian, informed that he is preparing a plan containing the precautions to be taken in case the shutters of Idukki dam is opened. The plan will be submitted to a Committee headed by the Chief Minister. Even though the gravity of rain is less the water inflow to the dam is strong. If this continues for another week the shutters of the dam is to be opened, informed M M Mani, the power minister informed last day.

 

 As per a data released at 7 a.m. yesterday the water level has risen 1.82 feet and touched 2392, recorded 87.29 percent as against 22.26 this time last year. In case the water level rose considerably and reach 8 feet more, the shutters of the Cheruthoni, with is a part of this dam, will open. The water will drain out through Cheruthoni River and reach Aluva and later reaches the Arabian Sea. The water will drain out through the dams such as Lower Periar, Idamalayar and Boothathankett. A control room will be opened and Orange Alert will be declared when the water level reaches 2395 ft.

 

The shutters of Cheruthoni was opened last in 11th October 1992 during  north eastern monsoon (Thulavarsham) when recorded a water level of 2401 ft.at Idukki dam. The shutters of the dam last opened on 22nd October 1981.
