Main witness in Abhaya case turns hostile during trial

Thiruvananthapuram: In a setback, the first witness in the Sister Abhaya case has turned hostile. Sister Anupama, who shared the room with Abhaya, turned hostile now. The CBI special court approved the prosecution’s demand to declare her turning hostile. Sister Anupama came in as the first witness after the deaths of the first and second witnesses. There are 50 witnesses in the case.

 

The trial in the case is starting after a gap of ten years. The trial in the case has been continuously postponed as the accused in the case had approached the court continuously. Second accused Father Jose Poothrukayil and crime branch former SP KT Michael were acquitted earlier.

 

Fr Thomas M Kottur and Sister Sephy are the main accused in the case. The charge sheet in the case was filed in 2009. Sister Abhaya was found dead in the well of St Pius X Convent in Kottayam on March 27 in 1992. The case investigated by the police was later taken over by the CBI in 1993.
